With a long, cold Boston winter upon us, it's time to start thinking about ways to combat colds and flu. Eating right, exercising regularly and keeping hands clean are all good options. But what if you're ready for something more? Something that will make a difference inside your home?
For many homeowners, adding UV lights or a UV purifier to their heating and cooling system is one way to get the upper hand on the germs that routinely cause illness. Using ultraviolet radiation, these lights are able to disinfect the air circulating within the home by destroying the ability of some bacteria and viruses to grow and reproduce. The end result is a lowered chance of infection among individuals living in the home.
In addition, UV lights also appear to be able to kill off some forms of mold — another area of concern for many homeowners. Unfortunately, mold is more difficult to eliminate entirely because it thrives in moist conditions that may not be directly tied to the heating and cooling system itself. Homeowners concerned about mold in particular would do well to find the source of the mold and remove it permanently. Once that issue is resolved, a UV-light system will be more effective and better able to handle any mold that remains in the air.
While UV lights and purifiers do well with bacteria, viruses and mold, they aren't designed to replace your HVAC system's filter. Filters remain an important first line of defense against common airborne contaminants like dust and pet dander. Even with UV lights in place, make it a priority to change your filter every 30 days, or whenever it appears to be dirty. Doing so will help ensure that your home's air is both disinfected and contaminant-free.
