Of course, this will mean spending a certain amount of money for your new system, which might be raising some concerns for you. In this case, you will be happy to know that if you purchase a central air conditioning system between now and the end of 2013, you will be eligible for energy tax credits of up to 10 percent during your next tax filing.
There are certain guidelines that your system will have to meet in order to be able to get these credits. Most of these will have to do with its overall efficiency and if you are not sure what to look for, a good way to begin is to look for systems that have earned the Energy Star. Of course, this is only a basic guideline as not all Energy Star systems are eligible for energy tax credits.
In order for your new system to meet the guidelines for energy tax credits, it will also need to have a specific basic and seasonal energy efficiency rating. Basic EER ratings for packaged systems must exceed 12, while split systems must be higher than 13. Packaged systems must also have a SEER of 14 or greater while split systems will have to boast a SEER of 16 or greater to be eligible.
When you have chosen the right system and you are ready to apply for your energy tax credits, the process is simple. All you need to do is fill out IRS form 5695 and send it in with your other tax documents. Then, you can expect the credit to either be applied to your balance owed or come back to you as part of your tax returns.
