Do you know how the size air conditioning you need is determined? If you said only by your home's square footage, you would be wrong. That used to be the method of sizing an air conditioner (and unfortunately still is by some contractors) but not anymore. There's a scientific method that responsible heating and air technicians now use. And, the calculation even includes adding the body heat of everyone in your household.
In days past, technicians would simply add up your home's square footage to determine the size of your air conditioning. That has created problems for many homeowners. Here's what can happen if an air conditioner is the wrong size.
A proper air conditioner should be sized based on a number of factors including these:
Technicians will also take into account your ducting, it's size and whether it is sealed. They will make sure your air flow rate is sufficient and refrigerant levels are at the amount recommended by the manufacturer. Smart technicians will place the outside unit in a shady area if possible, making sure the unit is cooled but not blocked by bushes or shrubs. And, they will ensure a balance between air delivery and return air registers.
If you're intending to upgrade your air conditioning, don't just settle for a unit based only on your square footage. Your home is unique and an air conditioner must be tailored to fit your situation.
