A whole-house humidifier, as a part of the heating system, has multiple benefits. It reduces dry, indoor air, eliminates static electricity inside the home, keeps our sinus and respiratory membranes from getting too dry and makes our winter heat feel more comfortable. A humidifier also saves us money by allowing us to cut the thermostat down a degree or two. Moist air feels warmer than dry air and the added moisture offers more comfort with less energy usage.
Usually, humidifier maintenance is simple and does not have to be performed very often. The quality of your homes water supply can effect the frequency of your humidifier maintenance. To make sure your humidifier works properly and effectively, here are a few tips to follow in order to effectively perform humidifier maintenance:
- Clear the Orifice--The orifice in a humidifier monitors the flow of water. After a long winter of use, the orifice may become clogged with scale and deposits. To assure a correct flow, use a needle and clear out the opening. Rinse clean and place back into the unit.
- Change the Filter--The filter, or evaporator pad, is usually a clay-coated honeycombed pad. The openings allow for air flow through the pad, causing moisture to disperse easily. Once scale becomes built up on these openings, air flow is reduced. The pad should be replaced at least once a year. Hard water may require changing it twice a year.
- Ensure Unit is Level--The ability of the unit to perform properly depends on being level. A unit that is not leveled will not distribute water evenly onto the pad.
- Close Damper--When the unit is not in use during summer, make sure the seasonal damper is closed. Open in the fall and make sure a clean evaporator pad is installed.
That is generally all the humidifier maintenance that is needed. Lime and mineral scale deposits left from the evaporation process are usually the central issue. Keeping these deposits removed is key to humidifier maintenance.
