When should you consider having professional indoor air quality testing? Is it only when you discover bats are living in your attic or bees in your walls? Those are two extreme examples that could definitely impact your indoor air.
But the truth is, indoor air quality is more often compromised by common, hidden problems. If family members begin developing symptoms of allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems, it may be a time to locate the problem.
Common indoor air threats
Indoor air quality testing can pinpoint sources that are causing discomfort or health problems. A short list of possible problems include:
Any of these pollutants in large quantities, or with long-term exposure, can cause problems. Getting professional indoor air quality testing can identify sources and amounts. Trained air-quality professionals have equipment, methods and abilities to track down sources and offer a range of options to deal with air problems.
Indoor air solutions
Once the offending source is uncovered, certain solutions are recommended. These may range from upgrading filters to adding ultraviolet lights or improving ventilation. Only through the process of discovering the source(s) can solutions be determined. Occasionally, there are more than one. An indoor air quality professional will not stop until all potential sources are checked. Once the sources are found, a combination of solutions may be necessary, including using an air purification system.
Special circumstances
Homes that have experienced flood damage, or newly purchased ones that have had multiple owners over a short span of time, may be candidates for air quality testing, too. Any circumstances that are unusual regarding building materials in the home, a long period of abandonment or other reasons may require indoor air quality testing -- particularly if a family member has a notable change in normal health.
