New England winters can be brutal and unforgiving. Lately, Mother Nature has thrown some hard punches in our area and we can never be sure what's ahead. So, it's best to start preparing now for the cold weather season. By doing a few energy-savings actions now, you can be prepared for the worst and keep energy costs as low as possible.

Here are a few tips that will keep the cold out, the heat in and your energy savings high. Check your home's:

Fireplace. If you plan to use a fireplace, make sure the damper works well and isn't clogged up with soot. When not in use, keep the damper closed tightly so that your heat doesn't go up the chimney.
Weatherstripping. As doors are used, weatherstripping can become worn, torn and ineffective. If yours is tattered, replace it.
Windows. Check around all windows on the outside of the home. If there is missing caulk or gaps, seal the areas to stop air infiltration.
Insulation. If you need to increase your insulation, do it now. Insulation is one of the best ways to increase your energy savings. And, don't forget to insulate behind electrical outlets and light-switch covers, areas where cold drafts can occur.
Heating System. If you haven't yet had preventive maintenance on your system, get it done before winter sets in. Knowing your furnace or other system is ready will prevent surprise breakdowns and costly repairs.
Ducts. Leaking or uninsulated ducts can rob you of energy savings. Either examine them or have them checked by a professional heating technician.
Air Conditioner. Cut off the A/C breaker, to increase energy savings, as it has a heating element that can waste electricity during the winter.
Filters. Start with a clean filter to keep your furnace clean and enhance indoor air quality.
Programmable Thermostat. If you don't already have one, these are great, affordable energy-savers.
