Radiant floor heating systems are, as you might guess, hidden under the floor. These systems create heat that transfers directly to the floor and to the people and objects in your room, such as your furniture. Hydronic floor heating systems are the most cost-effective type of heating system. These systems move warm water through a system of pipes installed under the floor. Zoning valves or thermostats control the temperature of each room in your home.
Some benefits of radiant floor heating:
- Radiant systems use less energy than forced-air heating systems to reach the same room temperature. Hydronic systems use very little electricity.
- Besides electricity, hydronic systems can be heated with a variety of energy sources, including solar water heaters, standard boilers fueled by gas or oil, and wood-fired boilers.
- Because radiant heat transfers so efficiently, radiant floor systems can be run at lower temperatures to achieve the comfort level produced by traditional systems, which transfer heat using convection.
- With radiant floor heating, dust and other allergens aren't circulated by moving air.
- No vents or radiators are required in your floors or walls unless supplemental heat is needed to overcome large heat losses such as lots of glass or lots of exterior walls with limited floor area.
- The heat is distributed evenly across the floors, so that rooms are kept evenly warm. That means no overly warm or overly cool spots.
