It's no surprise that A/Cs see the most use in the summer, but this has the downside of increasing energy bills. When you're seeking summer energy savings, it's important to have accurate knowledge. To go along with these tips for efficient A/C operation, here are five common myths which risk increasing your energy costs.
- Myth: Ceiling fans cool rooms. Rather than actually cooling a room, fans cool people via the wind chill effect. They do help in combination with A/C, though, so you consider combining them and turning the thermostat up three or four degrees. Just be sure to turn fans off when the room is empty.
- Myth: Closing central air vents improves efficiency. Central air units generally operate on a house-wide basis. They can't account for a closed register and will continue working. Make sure you use the A/C system that's right for you. For example if you only need to keep one room cool, a ductless mini-split system might make the most sense, or talk to your HVAC tech about a zoning system.
- Myth: Turn off the A/C while you're out. This one can be counter-intuitive. Why would you keep the A/C on if you're not home? The reason is that it takes a lot of work to bring a house down to the desired temperature. A programmable thermostat lets the house warm up somewhat and then and cool back down for your return.
- Myth: Turning the thermostat down improves cooling rates. Most air conditioners are either on or off, and can function no faster if you want a lower temperature. They will just run for longer and cost you more.
