With over 500 people dying every year from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the U.S. alone, it is imperative that you take measures to prevent an occurrence in your home. Thankfully, there are things you can do to ensure your property is safeguarded from CO poisoning.
- Always ensure you have a battery operated CO detector working in your home and change the batteries yearly. If at any time the detector sounds, leave the property immediately and contact 911. If anyone in the home feels lightheaded, dizzy or nauseous, don't hesitate to seek medical attention. Other symptoms include chest pain, vomiting and mental confusion.
- If you have a garage attached to your house, do not leave a vehicle running inside.
- Make sure that if you have any gas- or charcoal-burning devices, they're kept and used outdoor, not inside or in an attached garage or basement. Also, do not use a generator or camp stove near a window where fumes could easily enter your home.
- Refrain from heating your home using a gas oven or portable camping stove, which is a common temptation during a power outage. The same applies inside a camper van or tent.
- Always ensure your cooking and heating appliances have been serviced by a qualified technician to ensure they're operating properly.
- Most think of CO poisoning being a danger only in the winter months when heating is on, but the summer has its fair share of dangers too. For example, if you have a charcoal barbecue operating in the summer, make sure it's placed far away from any windows. A smoldering barbecue will emit poisonous CO fumes. By extension, do not bring gas and barbecues inside a tent.
