A geothermal heating and cooling system is a type of heat pump that exchanges heat from your home with the earth beneath your feet. It has an excellent efficiency and effectiveness, but there are many geothermal myths that steer homeowners in the direction of more popular systems.
How Geothermal Systems Work
When you heat your home in the winter, you have to extract heat from cold air outside, which is difficult. The ground a few feet down, however, is much warmer and easier to get heat from. In fact, that ground barely changes temperature throughout the entire year, ranging from 45 to 60 degrees. Since it’s much easier to extract the heat from the ground, you can achieve excellent efficiencies.
