There’s good news for Massachusetts homeowners who want to save on their energy bills but find the initial cost of purchasing energy-efficient HVAC equipment and appliances hard to swallow. Federal tax credits are available that will help offset these costs.
If you purchase an energy-efficient product or renewable energy system for your home, you may be eligible for one of these credits. State and local rebates also apply, so check with us about how you can qualify for these additional incentives.
There’s a lot of information out there about these programs. The Government wants you to know your options, so the U.S. Department of Energy has created a fact sheet about Federal tax credits. If you plan on purchasing any HVAC equipment or energy-efficient products for your home this year, you’ll want to check that out. Below is a summary of the Federal tax credits for energy efficiency:
Biomass stoves, HVAC equipment, insulation, roofs, non-solar water heaters and windows/doors:
Tax credit – 30% of the cost up to $1,500
Expires—December 31, 2010
Must be installed in an existing home and your principle residence. New construction and rentals are not eligible.
Geothermal heat pumps, residential wind turbines, solar energy systems:
Tax credit—30% of the cost with no upper limit
Expires—December 31, 2016
Existing principle and secondary homes and new construction qualify. Rentals do not qualify.
Residential fuel cells and microturbine systems:
Tax Credit—30% of the cost, up to $500 per .5 kW of power capacity
Expires—December 31, 2016
Existing principle residences and new construction qualify. Rentals and secondary homes do not qualify.
Some of these rebates expire soon, so if you’re looking at replacing your heating and cooling equipment any time soon, be sure to get in on these incentives before it’s too late. We can help you choose new, energy-efficient HVAC equipment that qualifies for the rebates and cuts your energy costs over the long term.
Federal and state tax incentives and rebates offer homeowners one reason to upgrade existing HVAC equipment and products with energy efficient models. Of course, your monthly energy savings are another. Ask us about which products qualify, and how you can benefit from these programs.
Our goal is to help educate our customers about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems). For more information about saving money with energy tax credits and rebates or other HVAC topics, download our free Home Comfort Solutions Guide.
