Cooler days are upon us, not to mention some downright chilly nights, and everyone knows the temps will only head south from here as the months fly by. If you haven't given any thought to the condition of your home heating system, now's the time to get started, especially since you want to have time to replace any faulty equipment.
Your furnace is the star of the home heating show. If you've been wondering if it's time for a furnace replacement, especially if you felt that it was underperforming last year, consider these points:
- Keep your system's age in mind. If it's more than 12 years old and hasn't been well maintained, the clock may be ticking on its life.
- Contact your trusted HVAC professional and ask for an energy audit to ensure that your furnace's hard work isn't being wasted. Seal air leaks throughout the home and perform any other recommended upgrades after the audit is completed.
- Make sure all filters are clean and allowing your system to operate efficiently. In fact, scheduling regular maintenance on any heating system is a good idea and will make sure that dirt isn't getting in the way of your comfort.
If at the end of all of this it does look as though your furnace is on the way out, keep in mind that there are many reasonably priced Energy Star products that are significantly more efficient than HVAC systems of decades past. They're also easier on the environment and the monthly energy expenses.
