Geothermal Heat Pump: Is This Option Right for You?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consider a geothermal heat pump (GHP) the most energy efficient form of heating and cooling available. GHPs achieve such efficiency by exchanging heat underground or with a body of water, and other than the electricity to run them, they use no other energy source. Their advantages may help you decide if this system is right for your home and family.

  • Energy efficiency - Cutting the cost of heating and cooling your home starts as soon as the GHP is installed. It uses up to four times less energy than a conventional heat pump because it exchanges heat in a stable environment underground, where temperatures change little throughout the year. While the temperature may be well below freezing above ground, there's always enough stored heat underground to extract. In the cooling cycle, it's easier to deposit excess heat from your home in the cooler thermal environment underground.
  • Longevity - The underground loop field for a geothermal heat pump usually carries a 50-year warranty, and the indoor component can last 25 years, as long as it receives routine maintenance.
  • Financial incentives - Besides lower monthly conditioning bills, choosing a GHP may qualify you for a federal tax credit up to 30 percent of the cost of system and its installation. This credit is active until the end of December 2016, and it helps offset the higher cost of geothermal systems, largely associated with installing the loop field.
  • Comfort - A GHP doesn't use an outdoor condenser like a central air conditioner does, keeping the yard quieter. Indoors, the GHP makes about the same amount of noise as a refrigerator. The blower fan doesn't move air at the same velocity a combustion system does and tends to run longer for each cycle. Its longer operating cycle distributes the air more thoroughly throughout your home, increasing the comfort in all the rooms, regardless of location.
