Why Massachusetts Homeowners Should Look for HVAC Techs With NATE Certification

When the HVAC technician who comes to your door has NATE certification, you already know some important things about that person. When it comes to the local handyman or self-described heating and cooling guru, however, what do you really know?

NATE certification

Anyone can claim the technical competence and hands-on experience to install or service today’s complex heating and cooling technology, but only an NATE certified technician has the industry-backed credentials to prove it.

What Is NATE?

Short for North American Technician Excellence, NATE was founded in 1997 as a joint effort of the HVAC industry to establish stringent standards and verify the skills of field technicians. As equipment became more technically complex, the industry recognized the need for a third-party organization to test and certify those technicians with the knowledge and professional commitment to handle the increasing demands. Since then, over 30,000 techs have earned certification.

How NATE Certification Works

NATE certification requires passing rigorous examinations in both HVAC theory and practical application, as well as a chosen area of specialty. Success is far from a slam dunk. The failure rate of NATE examinations is higher than any other certification program in the industry.

Once technicians have passed, the study goes on. To be eligible for re-certification in two years, candidates must complete a required minimum amount of classroom education.

Benefits of Using an NATE Certified Technician

For the homeowner answering the door when the HVAC serviceperson arrives, NATE certification means:

  • A job done right the first time. NATE techs arrive with the required knowledge and skills and leave with the work professionally completed.
  • Lower operating costs. Heating and cooling equipment installed and maintained to industry standards meets manufacturer’s specs for energy efficiency and peak performance.
  • Efficient, effective service. A technician certified by NATE has the know-how and equipment to accurately diagnose and repair issues in a straightforward, competent manner without guesswork or experimentation.
  • Reliable information and advice. If you have questions, a qualified NATE technician can help since he or she keeps abreast of the latest industry developments and advances in technology.
