A variable-speed air handler is designed to operate in close alignment with your cooling requirements. A variable-speed -- or dual-speed -- system saves energy in the same manner as a dimmer switch, which lets you run your lights at less than 100 percent.

Variable-speed air handlers have many benefits:

• They are energy efficient. A system that runs at less than full speed uses less energy, which makes utility bills more manageable.
• Summer humidity in Massachusetts can be uncomfortable and can create a breeding ground for mold spores. Variable-speed cooling systems are capable of removing more moisture from indoor air than conventional units. Some systems remove as much as 15 gallons every day.
• Because air moves through a dual-speed system more slowly than one running at full power, indoor contaminants have more time to become trapped in the air filter. This can dramatically improve indoor air, which is on the EPA’s list of top-five health concerns in the country.
• Variable-speed systems don’t create sudden bursts of chilly air, meaning your home won’t feel either too warm or too cold. They can also balance out trouble spots that are difficult to keep comfortable.
• An air handler running at less than 100 percent capacity generates less noise than a full-power system.
