Shopping For A New Water Heater? High-Efficiency Units Are Worth A Look

Consider the benefits of a high-efficiency tankless water heater before you replace your storage heater.

• Take up less space. The unit mounts on a finished wall. Its compact design takes up far less space than a traditional storage tank water heater. That leaves you with a little more floor space in the home for other things.
• Reduce stand-by costs. A tankless heater only heats water when  it is used. During vacations and weekends away, you won't waste energy keeping water heated in a storage tank that no one is using.
• There is no hot water limit as long as you don't exceed the total gallons per minute of flow rate. Should you ever have guests in your home, there is no need to worry about running out of hot water with a properly sized tankless heater. Tank style water heaters are limited by their 30, 40, or 50 gallon capacity. Once that is used up, you have to wait for the water to heat.
• It last longer. A typical storage tank heater lasts for about 5-7 years.  A high-efficiency  tankless water heater has an average lifespan of 20 years.
• No thermal heat loss. As hot water sits in storage tank, radiant heat is lost up through the center of the tank VIA the flue passage and chimney system. A high-efficiency unit has no thermal heat loss because it doesn't have a tank and vents directly to the outside with a fan operation rather than a chimney which is constantly drafting.

For a  typical Massachusetts home, 15 percent to 25 percent of its energy expense goes to heating water. A high-efficiency tankless water heater system will cost more upfront in initial installation costs, but it will save you money over the long run. The return on the investment is fairly quick.
