Voiding an HVAC Warranty May Be Easier Than You Think — 5 Mistakes to Avoid

Too often, homeowners who invest in new HVAC equipment don't fully understand the warranty provided by the manufacturer. Typically, a manufacturer's warranty only covers major component failures caused by defects related to workmanship. It doesn't cover the cost of preventative care, labor charges or items such as wiring, belts and air filters.

How to Protect Your New Equipment Investment

Opting out of an extended warranty and failing to sign up for a service agreement with your HVAC installer may seem practical since there's a manufacturer's warranty in place. You can easily find the new equipment completely unprotected, though, because voiding an HVAC warranty can happen if you make any of these mistakes:

  • The warranty doesn't get registered. Manufacturers usually have a time limit for registering a warranty. If you miss the deadline, the warranty period may be shortened drastically, or you may lose out entirely.
  • Off-brand parts are used for repairs. Most manufacturers insist that their name brand parts are used for repairs. If you choose to go with lower-cost replacement parts instead to save money, you may void the manufacturer's warranty.
  • The installation wasn't done properly. Faulty installations by inexperienced contractors can negatively affect HVAC system operation, energy efficiency, reliability and the equipment warranty. Manufacturers will deny warranty claims for equipment failures due to improper installation.
  • Professional maintenance is neglected. Manufacturers expect you to schedule regular preventative maintenance with a licensed HVAC contractor to keep the equipment tuned up. They know that proper care is necessary to keep the system in good condition, maintain efficiency and identify any problems that could cause a failure. If you neglect timely maintenance the warranty terms won't be met, and you could end up facing a costly equipment replacement without coverage.
  • Maintenance visits aren't documented. When you file a warranty claim, the manufacturer needs to see proof that the equipment was serviced as required. If you don't keep receipts, they may may not honor the warranty.
