Due to advanced A/C technology, present-day air conditioners have more bells and whistles than homeowners may be used to. They also provide significant benefits, including increased efficiency, quieter operation and longer life spans.
Advanced A/C technology available in modern air conditioners
- A seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of at least 13 - SEER shows how much energy it takes the air conditioner to provide a specific amount of cooling. Many older A/C systems have ratings as low as 6, so if you have one of these older systems with a low SEER — even if it's only five to 10 years old — upgrading your A/C could save you energy. Look for the Energy Star label to find a unit with a SEER of 13 or more.
- A variable-speed motor - Rather than maintaining one speed like standard motors, this type automatically adjusts the speed of the fan based on how much cooling's required for your home to reach ideal temperature. The advanced A/C technology in this motor saves a unit from excessive wear and tear and moderates the loud gust of cool or cold air that is common with A/Cs with single-speed motors.
- A fan-only switch - This option continues circulating air but without the actual cooling operation. The fan works well for nighttime ventilation, when it's generally already cool outside.
- A reminder light - This advanced A/C technology reminds homeowners to check and replace the filter after a predetermined number of operational hours.
- An automatic-delay fan switch - This switch makes the most of all of the energy spent to condition air by running the fan a few extra minutes after the compressor shuts off to move all of the cool air out of the ductwork.
