Having Ductwork Sealed? How Your Trusted HVAC Tech Tackles the Task

Leaky ductwork may be sapping warmth from your home this winter while running up your heating bills. A typical home might lose as much as 30 percent of its heated air (and cooled air in the summer) from leaking ducts before it reaches rooms in the house. Since most houses are built with ducts hidden in walls, attics and crawlspaces, inspecting and sealing ductwork is a job that is better left to a professional HVAC contractor. Here are some of the things your HVAC technician will do to ensure that your ductwork delivers conditioned air where it's needed:

ductwork
  • Visual inspection. Your HVAC tech will look for leaking seams, gaps between duct connections, kinked flexible ducts, duct sections that need insulation, and places where vents and registers are not tightly connected at ceilings, walls and floors.
  • Airflow balance evaluation. Your tech will perform tests to make sure supply and return air are in balance. This will help find leaks and determine whether return air ducts are large enough for your system. Your tech also will ensure that there's no backdrafting of potentially hazardous gases from your furnace flue.
  • Replace filter and seal vent connections. Your technician will replace your air filter and ensure that the filter slot does not allow air to leak around the filter. He will seal connections where vents and registers exit the walls, floors and ceiling.
  • Repair and replace ducts as needed. Sheet-metal screws, clamps, metal tape and mastic sealant are all tools your tech might use when sealing ductwork. Competent contractors will never use gray "duct tape" for sealing ductwork since it deteriorates quickly. Loose connections will be fastened tightly and sealed to prevent air leaks. Kinked flex ducts will be straightened or replaced as needed.
  • Insulate ducts. Anywhere your ducts run through unconditioned spaces such as your attic, they will need to be insulated to prevent energy losses.
