Are you looking for ways to lower your energy consumption? Before you can make energy-saving changes that will reduce your annual utility bills, you need to determine where the energy you're using actually goes. According to the federal Energy Star program, here's the energy bill breakdown for an average home:

Heating accounts for 29 percent of home energy use.

Air conditioning uses 17 percent.

Hot water heating comes in third at 14 percent.

Refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes washers and dryers use another 13 percent.

Lighting accounts for 12 percent of the energy consumed.

Computers, TVs and other electronics use 4 percent.

The remaining 11 percent is used by everything else, including small appliances, ceiling fans and the many devices kept on "stand-by."
Since heating and cooling together account for close to half of the energy consumed, implementing some energy-saving strategies in these two areas can have a big impact on your annual costs.

Use your thermostat wisely. In the winter, set it 10 degrees lower while you're sleeping at night, and during the day if no one is home. In the summer, do the opposite and raise the setting so you're not wasting energy.

Change your HVAC filter regularly. When your heating or cooling system has to pull air through a clogged filter, your equipment works harder, which requires more energy. Check your filter monthly, and replace it whenever it's dirty.

Prevent unnecessary energy losses. Make sure you have ample insulation in your attic. In the Route 495/128 area, you'll save the most energy by topping it up to a total of R-60. Seal up any gaps, cracks and holes around your windows, doors and foundation too.

Replace your inefficient HVAC units. If your equipment is 10 to 15 years old, you could see significant savings by upgrading to new, energy-efficient units. To ensure correct equipment sizing and efficient ducting, consult a knowledgeable and reliable HVAC professional before you invest.
