- Check doors and windows - Inspect weatherstripping, and replace deteriorated strips. Check all caulking and recaulk areas that aren't properly sealed.
- Inspect access points - Check windows and doors, and seal or replace as necessary to eliminate gaps. Caulk openings where cables, ducts and pipes enter the structure.
- Exterior treatments - Install window shades, tints or awnings to prevent excessive heating from direct sunlight. Plant trees at strategic locations to add shade and reduce heat around the immediate exterior of your house.
- Seal air ducts - Close gaps with mastic sealant. Inspect air ducts, and repair disconnected duct runs. Insulate ducts to prevent radiant heat loss.
- Examine HVAC system - Replace air filters every one to three months. Clean condensate lines and condenser coils. Straighten bent coil fins. Have thorough servicing performed by a qualified HVAC technician. Such services typically include checking electrical functions, air flow, refrigerant levels, locating refrigerant leaks, and checking air flow and electrical functions.
- Assess lighting - Replace outdated fixtures with current energy-efficient designs. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent ones to cut electricity usage by nearly 80 percent and excess heat emissions by more than 70 percent.
- Evaluate appliances - Energy-efficient appliances discharge less heat than older models and reduce cooling loads on the HVAC system.
