Keep Allergies at Bay With This Room by Room Approach to Improved Indoor Air Quality

The quality of air in your Massachusetts home can affect your health in a number of ways, but even more so if you suffer from environmental allergies.

indoor air quality, Framingham, Massachusetts

Here are some room-by-room steps you can take to help allergy-proof your home and improve your indoor air quality.

Basement

  • Flooring: Remove moldy carpeting and replace with concrete, linoleum or vinyl.
  • Control humidity: Use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture and clean the unit weekly to prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
  • Check for leaks: Regularly inspect the foundation and windows for signs of water leakage or damage.

Bathroom

  • Use a fan: Install an exhaust fan, vented to the outside, and use it each time you bathe or shower to remove excess moisture.
  • Replace carpeting: Use only hard flooring such as vinyl, tile or linoleum, and washable mats or rugs.

Bedroom

  • Bedding: Use dust mite covers on your mattress and pillows, and launder bedding in hot water once a week.
  • Window coverings: Washable curtains are best; replace horizontal blinds with drapes or roller type blinds.
  • Reduce clutter: Take the zen approach and remove items that collect dust such as knickknacks, books or stuffed animals.
  • Ban pets: Keep pets out of your sleeping area, and bathe or brush them often to reduce shedding.

Kitchen

  • Keep mold at bay: Regularly inspect the contents of the fridge and discard organic matter that is past its prime. Check under the sink and around fixtures for signs of leakage.
  • Remove moisture and odors: Use a vented hood fan when using the oven, stovetop or dishwasher.

Living Room

  • Find another home for plants: Potted plants can harbor mold and should be removed. As an alternative, cover the soil in pots with gravel to contain any mold.
  • Rethink furnishings: Consider replacing upholstered furniture with leather to reduce dust.

Whole Home

  • Streamline your cleaning routine: Dust regularly using a microfiber or electrostatic cloth to trap dust, and invest in a good quality vacuum with a HEPA filter.
