Benefits of UV Lights
Having a UV light installed in the return of your HVAC system can enhance the indoor air quality of the entire home. The ultraviolet rays of the light help control harmful contaminants that trigger allergies and other respiratory problems. These rays also destroy mold, mildew, fungus, viruses and germs as they pass by the light in your home's ductwork.
Change the Bulb
The normal life span of a UV light is about two years. However, if you rely on a UV light to disinfect your indoor air of contaminants, you should change out the light every 9,000 hours or every 12 months. After a year of use, these lights by their very design lose almost half of their germicidal effectiveness. If you have family members with respiratory problems, sticking to the yearly switch out is important.
However, if you're using UV lights to protect the interior of your HVAC system from fungus, mold, mildew and other harmful growth, you can switch out the light every two years.
